Resolution: European North East Atlantic, the IBI -Iberian Biscay Irish- area. Horizontal resolution is 1/12° (horizontal resolution ~ 6km), and the vertical one reaches up to 75 z-levels.
Data assimilated: Sea Surface Temperature (AVHRR + Multi-satellites High resolution), together with all available satellite Sea Level Anomalies, and with in situ observations from the CORA3.4 data base, including ARGO floats temperature and salinity measurements.
Assimilation method: SAM2 (Mercator Ocean assimilation system, Lellouche et al., 2013), is based on a reduced-order Kalman filter (the SEEK or Singular Extended Evolutive Kalman filter). An IAU method (Incremental Analysis Updates) is used to apply the increments in the system. The error statistics are represented in a sub-space spanned by a small number of dominant 3D error directions. A 3D-Var scheme corrects for the slowly evolving large-scale biases in temperature and salinity.
Forcing and relaxation used: Forcing and boundaries: the model is forced (every 3 hours) with ECMWF ERA-interim atmospheric products including 10-m wind, surface pressure, 2-m temperature, relative humidity, precipitations, short- and long-wave radiative fluxes. CORE empirical bulk formulae (Large and Yeager, 2004) are used to compute latent sensible heat fluxes, evaporation and surface stress. Solar penetration is parameterized according to a two-band exponential scheme with monthly climatological attenuation coefficients built from Seawifs satellite ocean colour imagery. Lateral open boundary data (temperature, salinity, velocities and sea level) are interpolated from daily outputs from the MyOcean GLOBAL reanalysis eddy resolving system. These are complemented by 11 tidal harmonics (M2, S2, N2, K1, O1, Q1, M4, K2, P1, Mf, Mm) built from FES2004 (Lyard et al., 2006) and TPXO7.1 (Egbert and Erofeeva, 2002) tidal models solutions. Riverine inputs are implemented as lateral points sources with flow rates based on daily observations (when available) and climatological values.
