National/international cooperation
In addition to disciplinary programs, our students and doctoral candidates benefit from an active exchange with numerous universities and research institutions in Germany and around the world.
The CEN School and its precursor SICSS have a long-established partnership with the International Max Planck Research School of Earth System Modelling (IMPRS-ESM), where doctoral students are using complex mathematical models to investigate oceans, atmosphere, vegetation, and ice. The IMPRS-ESM and the CEN School build on synergies deriving from this cooperation: joint course offerings, exchange of lecturers, and a joint “Climate Change” summer school in 2018.
The two-year Master of Science in Polar and Marine Sciences (POMOR) is a research-oriented degree program taught in English—similar to the ICSS program (Integrated Climate System Sciences). The degree is offered by Universität Hamburg in cooperation with Saint Petersburg University (SPBU) and the Otto Schmidt Laboratory for Polar and Marine Research (OSL) at the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI) in Saint Petersburg, Russia, and German partner universities in Bremen, Kiel, and Potsdam. At Universität Hamburg the POMOR scholarship holders of the third semester are enrolled in the ICSS master’s program.
Further international degree and exchange programs are afoot.
